Civil Rights Violations

Civil rights are the essence of our equality—they are the basis for which everyone is entitled to be treated equally regardless of race, color, age, gender, national origin, religion or disability.

They establish guarantees and freedoms that protect Americans from discriminatory conduct and ensure equal opportunity for all. Unfortunately, there are many people living in and around Oklahoma who are regularly subjected to discrimination in several aspects of their life including employment, education, housing and racial profiling. At Butts Marrs & Donchin, we are proud to protect the rights of those who have been discriminated against and are committed to seeking justice for those whose civil rights have been violated.

Workplace Discrimination

Workplace Discrimination

Oklahoma is an “at-will” employment state, meaning your employer can terminate your employment relationship at any time, no matter what the cause, without legal consequences. However, there are a few exceptions that would result in your employer facing legal consequences, one of which is discrimination. Employment discrimination is the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people because of their membership in a legally protected category such as race, sex, age, religion or disability.

Some examples are:

Age Discrimination: Failing to promote or hire a person over 40 years of age because of their age; people over 40 are members of a protected class because of their age.

Race Discrimination: Refusing to hire or promote a person of color because of their race.

Gender Discrimination: Paying women less than men for no reason other than gender.

Religious Discrimination: Refusing to hire someone because of their religious beliefs.

Disability Discrimination: Refusing to hire someone who uses a wheelchair or requires other workplace modifications.

Oklahoma and the federal government have enacted laws intended to protect employees from discrimination based on their race, national origin, gender, age, pregnancy, religion or disability. If you or someone you know has been a victim of unlawful workplace discrimination, contact our OKC civil rights attorneys so that we can help seek the compensation and justice you deserve.

Prisoner Abuse

Jails and prisons are notorious for depriving inmates of constitutional rights afforded under the 8th and 14th Amendments of The United States Constitution. Overcrowding of inmates, lack of sufficient staffing, unqualified staff, lack of proper training of detention officers, filthy conditions, lack of sanitation and inadequate medical care are all too common in jails. These conditions lend themselves to situations that result in inmates being deprived of their most fundamental rights and suffering injury or death. If you or someone you love has been injured while in custody, give our Oklahoma City Civil Rights Lawyers a call so that we can help you obtain the justice and compensation you deserve.

Excessive Force

Most Oklahoma law enforcement officers are honorable and dedicated individuals who are committed to upholding the law and protecting people. Sadly, there are some that have been known to use their position of authority to physically abuse people and prisoners, in violation of the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which protects inmates from unnecessary and wanton infliction of pain by detention officers. An officer who harms an inmate as part of a good-faith effort to maintain security has acted constitutionally, but an officer who harms an inmate for the very purpose of causing harm has engaged in excessive force. If you have been a victim of excessive force our OKC civil rights attorneys will help you seek justice.
